Hi! My name is Iliana. My sister, Emily, and I started Iliana's Bakery when I was 10 years old, and she was 14 years old. We started an online business because I had always wanted to start a bakery, but of course I was still in elementary school. My parents suggested making a website so that I could sell the delicious homemade treats I made. Fast forward to 2021, I am now 17, and I would like to advance my business and customer base. Today, I am 17 years old and finishing my last year at Windsor Secondary. I am hoping to pursue a degree in Bioengineering, a field which combines my passions for both math and science and applies them to positively impacting society. I now recognize that my interest in STEM didn't begin in my first real chemistry class, but instead through my love of baking. Whether we realize it or not, baking is an application of chemistry which happens to result in a delicious treat. From a young age, I was tweaking cookie recipes, creating my "perfect cookie." Upon reflection, I was really tweaking different chemical reactants to create modified (better tasting) products. From the science behind baking to the business and marketing strategies, owning a small business has taught me so much. I hope that my story inspires youth to take action just as 10-year-old Iliana once did. Following a passion can take you farther than you may ever imagine.
In the future, I would like to adapt Iliana's Bakery to be more than just an online business. I want to transform this platform to be a place for all ages to learn and be excited by science. I have started this process by creating a page to share the chemistry behind baking.
